I Have a Dream

Since today's meeting fell on Martin Luther King Day, we decided to focus on the red petal of our Daisy--the petal symbolizing courage and strength, the fourth of the Girl Scout Laws.

We started by talking about Dr. King--Why do we get a day out of school for his birthday? How were his actions courageous? What did he do that showed his strength?

They knew about King, understood--as well first graders can--his legacy. Several had read the same book about his life and work. They also all read well enough to perform in this very abbreviated form of his most famous speech. Yes, I had to do a little prompting, but they each showed bravery and tenacity in attacking King's text on short notice in front of an operating camera.
